As the closing date of December 31, 2006 for the Maytag/Whirlpool factory drew nearer, a tremendous outpour of support came from individuals, companies, and organizations in the region for the displaced workers and their families. The Silver Ribbon Campaign was initiated to acknowledge the plight of these laid-off workers, yet promote and signify the "silver lining" for potential opportunities the cloud harboring job loss could bring to each of the workers' families. Notification was then received the Technicolor Universal Media Services facility would close its doors on March 22, 2007. This Silver Ribbon Campaign helped to focus many of the surrounding communities on TUMS employees too, by showing respect and empathy for these workers who are such an integral part of the Southern Illinois family. This campaign resulted in positive and effective results in the following undertakings:

  • Businesses all over the region featured silver bows on their doors while individuals wore silver ribbon pins on their lapels and silver bracelets on their wrists. These efforts allowed the community as a whole to remember in the midst of crisis there are many more exciting possibilities right around the corner.
  • Many area businesses utilized their workplace marquees to acknowledge the workers and the contributions each had made to their community.
  • A collective challenge to individual communities was issued to find ways to show support with actions and words of encouragement. A regional day of prayer saw participation by local pastors and spiritual leaders from various churches, denominations, and ministries to provide a "spirits lifting" day in honor of the workers.

During these tumultuous times for the dislocated workers, often solace came by maintaining contact with their former co-workers. Two events provided the venue for the workers to gather together in an effort to stay connected.

  • A Maytag/Whirlpool gathering took place on Sunday, January 21, 2007 at the Herrin Civic Center. Over 300 workers and family members attended and were greeted by Herrin Mayor Vic Ritter. Mayor Ritter presented the workers with the Mayor's Award during the evening that was filled with respect, gratitude, and reverence. Musical entertainment and a complimentary barbeque dinner were available for all attendees.
  • A picnic at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds was held on June 16, 2007 in honor of the former Technicolor workers and their families. Pinckneyville Mayor Joe Holder delivered the message of appreciation and hope for the event's attendees. Hot dogs and other snacks were prepared for the workers. Childrens' games, prizes, and music made this a great experience for the 100 in attendance!
